Hibernation Unit!

Our class brought bear friends to school to help us learn about HIBERNATION!

We learned fun facts about them and sang some songs.

We watched real bears hibernating online,

and journaled about what we learned!

We did an experiment where we used  shortening to see if "fat" helps keep bodies/hands warm!

Crisco shortening and gloves helped keep our hands warm! So we learned extra layers of "fat" keep  bears warm!!!

Our bears listened to stories with us...

showed us how to "hibernate"...

read with us at Daily Five...

played Splash Math on ipads with us...

spelled Christmas words at Word Work with us...

listened at Show 'n Share...

listened to our Parent Reader...

and even learned some computer skills! Here our Tech Buddies (6th Grade) are mentoring them, too!!!

After computer lab, it was time to say goodbye!

We did the bear crawl to our den...

gave farewell hugs...

(We LOVE Bears!)

and sealed them up for the Winter!

Thank you, God, for allowing Bears and other animals to hibernate when food is scarce and the weather is harsh!  We look forward to greeting them in January!!!

PUMPKIN Fun!!!

In our PUMPKIN unit, we labeled its different parts! A seed is planted, then a stem and vine grows, flowers begin and when they fall off, a pumpkin grows!

We cut out our own pumpkins, stem and leaves!

Next, we colored its life cycle!

Pastor Snow came and explained how WE are like pumpkins! God chooses us, cuts out our yucky stuff (forgives all our sins) and...

when we have faith in our Savior Jesus, His light shines through us into a darkened world!!!

We celebrated PUMPKINS with our families at Applejack Pumpkin Patch!

Check out our fun!

Then we enjoyed a snack (and birthday cookie!) before our wagon ride to the Patch!

It was a WONDERFUL field trip!  Thanks, Moms and Dads for joining us!  In the afternoon, we decorated our HARVEST pumpkins with our 8th grade chapel buddies!

Thank you, God, for PUMPKINS, our families, friends, and FUN!! AMEN!

Birds, Birds, Birds!

We loved learning about BIRDS!

We listened to and read LOTS of BIRD books,

Mr. B. showed us his favorite (a whooping crane), and we listened to its "call"! Here we are learning about different sized eggs! The ostrich has the largest! The hummingbird the smallest!

We searched through lots of books for OUR favorites, and wrote about them in our journal,

and illustrated them, too!

We learned about beaks and bills and "ate" sunflower seeds like a bird, using tweezers! (beaks)!

At center time, we traced BIRD templates, cut them out and decorated them!

What's your favorite? Nicholas' is the EAGLE!

We made "Regal Eagle" cookies! YUM!

We journaled about what we would do if WE were a bird!!!

Then we used shortening and birdseed to spread on pinecones...

for BIRDFEEDERS!

We think they are going to LOVE them this Winter!

Thank you, God, for BIRDS!

cut a core in half for our Science experiment! We saw the APPLE STAR and the 5 seeds!

We made "torn apple" art in Art class and tasted red, green and yellow apple slices! Our classes' favorite? GREEN!

We tasted APPLE foods/drink. Pie, slices with caramel, sauce and juice. Our favorite?  Caramel and slices!!!

Cheers to you!

We even made "apple pies" at our sensory table at center time!

Next week, we celebrate Johnny Appleseed's birthday!

THANK YOU, GOD, FOR APPLES! YUM!!!!

Daily 5 and CENTER FUN!

Daily 5 centers are each morning. What are the 5 types of centers?  We have a 1. "Letter/Word work" center, (we form letters out of our play doh)

more "Letter/Word Work" (buttons on letters),

also spelling names with play doh in "Letter/Word Work",

2. a Daily 5 "IPad" center, (this month we practice our letters in "Writing Wizard"),

4. "Reading in our Nook" by ourselves or with friends,

and 5.  our "Small Reading Group"! Our teacher reads to us and sometimes, parents do!!! Soon, we will read decodable readers in our groups and take them home to read to YOU!!!

Each afternoon we do STEAM centers. (Science, Technology, English and Math) They've included: puzzles with shoulder partners,

Light table fun,

letter building with lego fun,

Math plinko fun,

Math patterning fun,

Alphabet bingo,

construction fun,

and "acting out of Bible stories!" Here is the serpent and the tree in the Garden of Eden!

Kindergarten is FULL of center fun and "learning"!

Last Week FUN!

We had SO much fun the last week of school!

We finished our FARM unit,

said goodbye to our chicks,

and made some of our own to take home!!!

We watched a wonderful play about the "Little Red Hen"! (Mr. B's kindergarten Reading group)

We learned about the Braille Ministry at Holy Cross Lutheran Church.

Nic's Grandparents and Great-Grandma began and coordinate this special ministry.

Church members volunteer each Wed. to compile books in many languages.

Bibles are sent all over the world -some countries we have "visited" this year!

We had Reader's Theatre and read our favorite journal entries!

We drew our favorite Bible stories outside, in chalk!

We watched the 5th graders plant a new crabapple tree right outside our classroom!

We celebrated all of our Summer birthdays!

Levi played piano for his show 'n share!

We were his courteous audience!

We even had a "food fight" when we traveled to Spain! They have an annual tomato-throwing event! (We used marshmallows!)

Each Friday in May, we had an auction to bid on items from our Treasure box. We bid and paid with pennies, nickels and dimes and practiced our counting!

We thank you, God, for a WONDERFUL year. Thank you for your love in sending Your Son, Jesus, to be our Savior!

May He keep us close to Himself this Summer, and ALWAYS!

We LOVED our Chick unit!

We were given 12 fertile eggs to incubate!

Our incubator kept the eggs warm (100.5 degrees) for 21 days!

Pastor Snow helped us "candle" the eggs to check on their growth.

We saw shadows inside the eggs!

We watched chicks hatching on youtube! Chicks use their egg tooth to prick a hole and hatch from there!

We had 4 New Hampshire Red and 4 Rhode Island Red chicks to love! We learned what chicks love to eat, and how much water they drink a day!

Mrs. Wilson made us our own baggies of chickfeed! (granola mix!) YUM!

We were so gentle!

We watched "Charlotte's Web" during our unit,

formed egg shapes with play doh,

got to pet some FARM puppies with Mr. Rolph (Titus's Dad),

and said goodbye to our one and a half week-old chicks! They are moving to a local farm!

They are twice the size they were last week!

Our FARM unit ended with a play put on by Mr. B's kindergarten Reading group! They presented "The Little Red Hen"!

It was WONDERFUL!

Thank you, God, for FARMS and, especially, chicks!
